Juma and Mwangi have been instrumental for Nzoia in the last two seasons.
Nzoia’s push to win their first league title in over 20 years could be dealt a blow in the next few weeks, with Tusker said to be keen on signing up to three players from the Bungoma-based side.
The Millers are the surprise league leaders this season with their flair and ability to suffocate opponents, earning plaudits. This has in turn increased their fanbase back home, and in Nairobi, they are equally attracting new supporters who throng the stadium to catch a glimpse of their artistry on the pitch.
This fairytale could soon be dented with struggling Tusker keen on beefing up their midfield in readiness for the second leg. The Brewers are after Joseph Mwangi, who is the club’s top scorer with seven goals, Kevin Juma, the club’s assistant captain, and another key member of that midfield.
The two players trained with Tusker before the start of the current campaign but had to go back to Nzoia as the two clubs failed to agree on a fee. But with the departures of Clyde Senaji and Apolo Otieno, coach Robert Matano is keen on getting the pair this time around. Exciting winger Hassan Beja is another player being eyed by the 12-time league champions.
“They have reached out to the two players, but the moves are far from close because they have to negotiate with the club for a transfer fee.” “The two players are open to moving to Tusker if the clubs can reach an agreement,” a source privy to the developments told Mozzart Sport.
Ordinarily, losing key players would be a big blow for a coach; losing them in mid-season would be worse as he may not find an ideal replacement on time, but Nzoia Sugar coach Salim Babu is not one to be bothered by potential exits.
“When a player gets a chance to move to another team, we cannot deny them the chance to do so.” If one gets the chance, we will allow them to leave. We have so many other players on the team who are very ready to come in and show what they have. “That is not a concern for me; I believe when one leaves, it will give another player the chance,” a buoyant Babu said.
